Culture

Le Marche has many cultural sites, like thousands of churches and monuments, and hundreds of beautiful squares and castles. Many of the classical amphitheatres are even still functional. There are over a hundred of towns, each one of them worth while visiting. And what about the many museums Le Marche has to offer. Lovers of painting can enjoy famous works of Piero della Francesca, Rafael, and Titiaan. There is also a botanical garden, a bicycle museum, a museum for watermarks and even one for hammers. Although the opening hours are different for each museum, during the holiday season almost all museums are open between 1000 – 1200 hours and 1500 – 1700 hours.

Neighbouring towns of Sopra e Sotto

In the direct neighbourhood of Sopra e Sotto are many lovely little towns to discover. Most of them are located on top of the hill, once built to protect against intruders from overseas. Ringed around Montelparo are the towns of Santa Vittoria in Matenano, Monteleone di Ferme, Monte Rinaldo, Ortezzano, and Montedinove. Nice towns further towards the western mountains are Amandola, Comunanza, and Sarnano. North of Sopra e Sotto, on slightly higher peaks, are the lovely towns of Loro Piceno, San Ginesio, Penna San Giovanni, and SantfAngelo in Pontano. East and south, overlooking the sea, are the pretty mountain villages of Petritoli, Monterubbiano, Montelfiore dellfAso, Montalto della Marche, and Offida.

Markets

Italians do almost all of their shopping in the market. Therefore, most large villages and cities have a weekly morning markets. There, you can also buy the delicious regional products and delicatessen. Herefs a list of local markets worth going to:

Antique markets

Many cities in Le Marche have monthly jumble sale markets where you can find a mix of antiques and emodernariatof (not-so-antiques). The main jumble sale markets in the region are:

Ascoli Piceno: 3rd Saturday & Sunday of the month
Tolentino and Ancona: last Saturday & Sunday of the month
Civitanova Marche: 4th Sunday of the month
Fermo: all Thursdays in July and August

Festivals and events

From early spring to late autumn there are numerous festivals and events. Most festivals are historical village festivals focused on competitions and gastronomy (food and drink). Some festivals date from the Roman days, others, such as the epaliofsf originate from the middle ages, or focus on the 18th and 19th century. The list of efestafsf is endless.
